You’re Grieving What Could Have Been
Sometimes you’re grieving more than what you’ve lost. You’re grieving what could have been.
You’ve lost someone you love, and the world keeps moving even though yours has changed completely. A relationship ended, and you’re mourning not only the person but the future you imagined together. Or a major life change has you wondering what happened to the life you thought you’d have.
Sometimes the hardest losses are the ones other people don’t quite know how to recognize. The relationship that never became what you hoped. The childhood you wish you’d experienced. The version of yourself that existed before everything changed.
There might not be a funeral, an anniversary, or even a clear moment when things ended. But the grief is still there.
Nobody Else Sets Your Timeline
Grief is confusing. Sadness comes one moment and relief the next, then anger, guilt, numbness, even happiness, and you wonder whether you’re allowed to feel it.
The people around you have started encouraging you to move forward. They mean well, and their words leave you feeling like there’s a timeline you’re supposed to keep. And you can’t help wondering, “Am I doing this wrong?”
That question comes from grieving something nobody around you counts as a loss. What grief needs is permission, and no coping skill hands it to you.
Grief isn’t something you have to perform correctly.

You Won’t Be Expected to Find a Silver Lining
We’ll make room for the loss without letting it define everything. You won’t be expected to turn a painful experience into a lesson, and whatever emotions are present belong here, complicated ones included.
Together we’ll look at memories, regrets, unanswered questions, and changes in your sense of who you are. We’ll talk about what that person or experience meant, and how those meanings still shape your life. We’ll pay attention to your day-to-day as well: steadying overwhelming emotions, telling the people who love you what you need, approaching milestones that now feel different.
Some days, our work is about sitting with the sadness. Other days, it’s about rediscovering what gives your life meaning. There doesn’t have to be a predetermined destination.
Moving Forward Doesn’t Have to Mean Leaving Everything Behind
Moments of happiness arrive without guilt. You remember someone you love without holding yourself together or pushing your emotions away, and a future different from the one you’d planned becomes possible to imagine.
Healing from loss doesn’t necessarily mean forgetting, replacing, or moving on. Sometimes, it means learning how to carry what’s meaningful while making space for the life that’s still unfolding.
There’s no right way to feel about something that mattered to you. Your relationship with what you’ve lost is personal, and so is the way you learn to live with that loss.
